Interpreting Explained

What Is Interpreting?

Interpreting is the spoken or signed transfer of meaning from one language into another in real time. It is used when people who do not share a common language need to communicate directly — in meetings, appointments, hearings or on-site visits.

Unlike translation, which works with written text, interpreting happens live. The interpreter listens in one language and conveys the message in another, preserving meaning, tone and intent.

At TTC, we provide qualified interpreters for business, legal, healthcare and public sector settings across Ireland. We offer on-site interpreting in Dublin and nationwide, and remote interpreting by phone or video.

Know the Difference

Interpreting vs Translation: What Is the Difference?

The two terms are often confused. They describe different services.

Translation

Working with written text.

Focus

  • Documents
  • Accuracy of written meaning
  • Delivered after the work is completed
  • Certified translations available
Example: Translating a contract from Polish into English.

Interpreting

Working with spoken language in real time.

Focus

  • Live conversation
  • Immediate meaning transfer
  • Delivered on the spot
  • Tone and intent preserved
Example: Interpreting for a Polish-speaking client at a solicitor's meeting in Dublin.

Many clients need both. Translation handles the documents. Interpreting handles the conversations.

Interpreting Modes

Types of Interpreting We Provide

We provide the main modes of interpreting used in business, legal, healthcare and public sector settings.

Consecutive Interpreting

The interpreter speaks after the original speaker pauses. This is the most common mode for meetings, appointments and interviews.

Best for Business meetings, medical appointments, legal consultations, immigration interviews.

Simultaneous Interpreting

The interpreter speaks at the same time as the speaker, usually via audio equipment. Used for conferences, court hearings and large events.

Best for Conferences, court proceedings, large events, live broadcasts.

Remote Interpreting

Interpreting delivered by phone or video call. Useful when an interpreter cannot be on-site, or for short notice requests.

Best for Urgent appointments, remote meetings, healthcare consultations, short bookings.

On-Site Interpreting

An interpreter attends in person at your location. Available in Dublin and nationwide, subject to availability.

Best for Legal proceedings, medical appointments, site visits, official meetings.

If you are unsure which mode you need, tell us about the setting and we will recommend the right option — request an interpreter.
